Computer and Internet based crimes or incidents are growing at astounding levels. ID theft occurs about once every 70-80 seconds according to the Federal Trade Commission . Much of it occurs online where stolen identities are sold in chat rooms, Internet Relay Chat room (IRC) channels, or they are used to purchase illegal items on eBay and other online auctions. Children are approached for sexual exploitation thousands of times a day. Recently, while sitting idly in a chat room under an assumed identity of a 14 year old girl, I was approached by five different adult males. Three of the five were at work while attempting to engage me in online chat with sexual content. This all occurred in the fi rst eight minutes of my logging into the room. That is a felony occurring roughly about once every two minutes involving a minor.
